BB –  We are talking today about “THE ROCK OF OFFENSE”

So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))

  1. Bob – POINT: The words are found a number of times in scripture pointing the fact the Lord Jesus Christ was both a blessing to many BUT to others He’s an offense..

1 Peter 2:6–8 (ESV) — 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

  1. JT This is the PowerBreak Podcast, I’m JT along with Bob Brubaker and this is the –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO jtrebino@mac.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…

JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

Why is the Lord Jesus Christ listed as a source of blessing on one hand but a rock of offense on the other hand?

  1. Bob

Just how it is… If God reveals His truth to you, you can’t take credit for it, it’s simply a blessing of His grace or unmerited favor…

2 Timothy 1:9–10 (ESV) — 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

Those who have not been blessed by God – not only don’t understand, they can’t…

1 Corinthians 2:14 (ESV) — 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

Therefore, man’s natural reaction to God and to the Lord Jesus Christ is to be offended… and to turn away in anger or try to snuff out what is being revealed to those that God has chosen. That is why Jesus said…

John 16:33 (ESV) — 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

1 Peter 1:7–8 (ESV) — 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,

DISCUSSION

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

How can we mentally bring ourselves to appreciate Christ and be ready for the offense of the Gospel?

  1. Bob

Gratitude

1 Peter 3:15–17 (ESV) — 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

  1. Discussion
  2. Third question … Turning to the Physical

Last time we talked about heat acclamation and what to do differently when things heat up…. What about some specifics of electrolytes? Since we mentioned last time that keeping up with fluids is important, and electrolytes too. What about electrolytes?

  1. Bob --- thanks to Steve Born from Hammer Nutrition

In addition to replenishing calories and fluids, proper fueling during exercise requires consistent and adequate electrolyte support as well. However, while it’s usually pretty easy to get your calorie and fluid needs dialed in, replenishing electrolytes requires a bit more effort. This is because your specific electrolyte requirements will not only differ from another athlete’s, sometimes greatly, but will also change constantly, depending on your fitness level, acclimatization level, and training duration and intensity. In fact, your electrolyte requirements may change during the course of the same workout or race, if only due to changes in the weather (e.g., what you need at 2:00 pm, when it’s warmer, may be higher than what you needed at 9:00 am, when it’s cooler).

Now, many athletes neglect consistent electrolyte replenishment because they’ve “never had cramping problems.” But even if you’ve been fortunate enough to have never suffered the painful, debilitating effects of cramping, you still need to provide your body with a consistent and adequate supply of electrolytes. Why? Because the primary goal in replenishing electrolytes is not so much to prevent cramping as to maintain specific bodily functions at optimal levels. Proper functioning of the digestive, nervous, cardiovascular, and muscular systems depends on adequate electrolyte levels. That’s why we’re fond of saying that electrolytes are comparable to the motor oil in your car—they don’t make the engine run, but they’re absolutely necessary to keep everything running smoothly.

Back to muscle cramping. Though there are many theories as to why it happens, it usually involves improper hydration and/or improper electrolyte replenishment. No one wants to cramp, of course, but remember, cramping is a place far down the road of electrolyte depletion. You never want to reach that point, mainly because it’s extremely painful, but also because your performance has already been severely compromised for some time. You want your body to perform smoothly, without interruption or compromise, so just as you don’t wait until you’re dehydrated or bonking before you replenish fluids or calories, you never want to wait until you’re cramping before replenishing electrolytes.

Bottom Line: As important as the calories you consume and the water you drink during exercise is the consistent replenishment of electrolytes.

By the way SALT TABLETS are not the answer.

Salt tablets are an unacceptable choice for electrolyte replenishment for two important reasons:

1) They can oversupply sodium, thereby overwhelming your body’s ability to regulate electrolyte and fluid balance/

2) They provide only two electrolytes, sodium and chloride, when your body requires a full array of electrolytic minerals.

JT’s Comments

Take Aways – JT …. And Bob

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to prepare for and apply good sense to training in hot weather as we said last week but it also is critical you look into a good source of balanced eletrrolytes because you will be glad you did.

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
