BB – We are talking today about “The Gift Of Suffering”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: We think suffering a bad thing --- so we need to take a look at how suffering is treated in Scripture, particularly the good that come from it… after all consider the Lord Jesus Christ….
Hebrews 12:3 (ESV) — 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
I know you covered this in your synopsis of the article but I find it hard to think of suffering as a GIFT… it seems kind of cruel – can you explain?
- Bob
“Discipline makes the difference in all aspects of life.”
Hebrews 12:5–11 (ESV) — 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally bring ourselves to see suffering as a gift from God?
- Bob
We have to forego the mindset of comfort over conformity, and focus on the value of conformity to Christ and His suffering on our behalf. Our suffering will never match His BUT our suffering becomes a connection to Him and His suffering, along with His resurrection power seeing us through every difficulty as we are conformed more and more to the image of Christ in our character. In other words instead of focusing on the pain in suffering, focus upon the promised outcome.
- Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
It’s summer and it’s hot. What are some ways to beat the heat when we workout and it’s H O T. HOT?
- Bob ---
Some ideas from the Hammer Nutrition staff…
- One way to train in the heat is to acclimate yourself by training in the heat!
- Staying hydrated when you workout or race is a byproduct of staying hydrated everyday.
- Take in fluids while you exercise. Caution that you don’t overdo it … which may seem hard to do but often people overdo the water alone and actually give themselves dehydration symptoms because they dilute the electrolytes in the blood.
- That means while you take in fluids, you need electrolytes too.
- Avoid foods which contain short term carbs, keep the carb intake to complex carbs.
- Pace yourself.
- Use caffeine with caution.
- Get wet.
- Know the symptoms of dehydration.
JT’s Comments
Take Aways – JT …. And Bob
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to prepare for and apply good sense to training in hot weather but the result is keeping up and thriving in the HOT weather rather than sitting around and not training because of the heat…
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
