JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
If God gives us a new heart, why must we be concerned to guard it?
- Bob
Sounds logical but remember that even though our hearts have been changed, the remains of the old linger on in our lives, seeking to pull us away. It’s often called the flesh, as in our nature that we must constantly put to death by suppressing the call through our emotions and old ways of thinking and making decisions.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) — 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Colossians 3:5–10 (ESV) — 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally bring ourselves to be vigilant to guard our hearts?
- Bob
Proverbs 4:23 (ESV) — 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Keep or guard --- what is valuable… lest we fall into the trap of unbelief, or hardness of heart, or distraction.
- Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
Let’s talk about some ways to work a regular exercising habit into life. Some people hear us talk about exercising and they need help just starting a program. So let’s go back to the basics of going from couch to a regular exercising regimen.
- Bob ---
- Write out some goals --- like an attainable long term goal, broken down to short term attainable goals that will build momentum. Best case scenario is to work with a coach to see where you are and look as to where you want to be and the benchmarks to get you there along the way. (((ILL of going from couch to 5K)))
- Schedule your workout time on your calendar. Remember this is YOU time and since it’s scheduled you don’t have to think about whether to do it or not.
- Take away any excuses. Set out your clothes, have your workout in hand, design your morning routine (or whenever you have decided is best.)
- Build your momentum efforts gradually. Don’t bite off too much too soon or too hard too quickly.
- Make exercise part of your identity. “I’m a runner” “I’m a cyclist”
- Talk it up with others about the pleasures you are experiencing along the way.
JT’s Comments
Take Aways – JT …. And Bob
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to apply RICE when you are injured but it can speed the healing and get you back in the race sooner than later.
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
