BB – We are talking today about “The Spec and the Log”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: Criticism abounds! As Jesus spoke against being a critic, so we can also find good counsel on accepting criticism.
Proverbs 10:19 (ESV) — 19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
Are you saying that we are never to judge or offer criticism to another person?
- Bob
No and I’ll add that Jesus is not saying that in His sermon on the mount as some people accuse Him of saying. Notice again His words:
Matthew 7:1–5 (ESV) — 1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Actually He’s warning is judging and criticizing another person without considering yourself.
Galatians 6:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
From the other side… think of how a person will be more apt to receive a word of judgment or constructive criticism from a person who is as Paul says, “keeping a watch on himself” than a person who just fires off criticism… and many times unjustly.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally bring ourselves to appreciate and make the most of a word of criticism?
- Bob
1st Think of life as a training ground with multiple helps of improvement in all areas of life are all around us. Yes the criticism may come from an imperfect person in an imperfect way, but if there is a grain of truth in what they say, take it and use it. More than likely you can find something to apply from every criticism.
2nd – Keep in mind that you are not perfect and have some growing to do. God is mindful of that and He cares about you.
3rd as stated in the blog, the words from Joel Beeke – consider the source of the criticism, not as a way of blowing off all they said, rather consider their lives and hurts they have and what may be causing them to look at things with a critical eye.
Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
Let’s talk about naps and napochino… What’s up with that?
- Bob ---
Let’s begin with naps… JT – what is the best length of a nap?
Actually 20 to 60 minutes… and no more than 90 minutes because you cut into your ability to sleep at night.
A napochino – not sure of the spelling but this is an audio podcast…
It’s when you drink coffee and take a 20 minute nap. Here’s the reasoning.
When you drink coffee it takes 20 minutes for the effects to take place in your body. So why not nap while await your coffee to work. The coffee helps you to awake from nap alert.
Naps are good for you.
JT’s Comments
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to n eap and to get the most out of your nap but you will benefit every time.
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
