BB – We are talking today about “Waiting Patiently”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: It’s hard to wait for anything. We are all giving to impatience as we wait… but particularly for the Christian waiting for the coming of the Lord.
We are not without hope, however…. As we groan….
Romans 8:18–23 (ESV) — 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
What is the difference between waiting in general and waiting for the coming of the Lord?
- Bob
There’s not much difference but we can learn much about waiting in general as we look at how we should wait for the coming of the Lord.
For one thing – as we await the coming of the Lord, we wait with patience as we review the promises of God. That was good for OT saints as they waited the coming of the Lord as Messiah…
Isaiah 9:6–7 (ESV) — 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
That is what Simeon was doing as God assured him that he would see God’s salvation before he died.
The second thing we can do is take note of how John the Baptist was assured as he was told to review the evidences of the Jesus, fulfilling the role of Messiah. Likewise, we review the Gospels and Acts and see how the evidence was set forth that Jesus is the Chrsit… as John says…
John 21:25 (ESV) — 25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
The third thing to consider is the groaning of creation and our own groaning which is the evidence of a longing for the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God does not give us that longing to fool us or to play with us. Rather He lets us know any apparent delay has a purpose and it’s not because He’s a slacker…
2 Peter 3:8–10 (ESV) — 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally bring our selves into a state of patience as we await the coming of the Lord?
- Bob
Romans 8:23–25 (ESV) — 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Romans 5:3–5 (ESV) — 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
