BB –  We are talking today about “Approaching The Finish Line”

So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))

  1. Bob – POINT: We never know when we will be called to cross the finish line so we need to be ready at all times to FINISH WELL.

2 Timothy 4:6–8 (ESV) — 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

You covered Paul’s key to finishing well but how does that apply to us?

  1. Bob

What Paul expressed in the days prior to his death in Rome is most applicable because we do not know when our time is to stand before our King so we need to be ready, as ready as Paul expressed… in his counting himself as simply a drink offering to the Lord Jesus Christ in total submission to His will as our King. As He recounted the faithfulness of His Shepherd, as David did in Psalm 23, and as He looked forward to a glorious finish as Steve was able to experience….

Acts 7:55–60 (ESV) — 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him. 58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

DISCUSSION

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

How can we mentally grab hold of the concept of finishing well?

  1. Bob

Hebrews 12:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Romans 12:1–2 (ESV) — 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Discussion

  1. Third question … Turning to the Physical

With a lot of people moving to indoor training at this time of the year, which is better running on the treadmill indoors, or running outside, likewise which is better, riding inside on a trainer or outside?

  1. Bob ---

It depends on the weather and how much time you have to train.

If your time is short and you’d cut your run time down or your cycling time down, then training inside will give you an effective workout in a short period of time.

Likewise if the weather is cold, raining, or snowing sometimes and outdoor workout can be therapeutic but can also make way for some injuries if you fall. Indoor workouts can be the answer.

It’s been documented that even the top athletes use at least one workout per week on the treadmill or trainer.

Likewise if you are nursing an injury, it’s safer on a treadmill or trainer.

You can govern your effort closer, but you cannot get the full effects of outdoor training.

It’s not a perfect world and it shouldn’t be an either or but if it means you NOT train because of time or weather – train inside.

JT’s Comments

Bob’s final comment – we say it often but it takes discipline to exercise on a trainer or treadmill when time is short or weather is hindering…. BUT you still get results in the long run….

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
