So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: Such an unusual concept … prisoners of hope… but it’s introduced in Zechariah 9:11–12 (ESV) — 11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
When you say prisoners of hope, it’s certainly not the concept of incarceration. Explain a little more about what is meant by prisoners of hope.
- Bob
Everything about a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is about hope.
Titus 1:2 (ESV) — 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began
Hebrews 6:18–20 (ESV) — 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Zechariah 9:12 (ESV) — 12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.
Romans 8:14–25 (ESV) — 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Romans 5:3–5 (ESV) — 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
1 Peter 1:13 (ESV) — 13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally grab hold of being a prisoner of hope?
- Bob
Proverbs 10:28 (ESV) — 28 The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
Romans 4:16–18 (ESV) — 16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”
Psalm 119:49 (ESV) — 49 Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope.
Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
I saw an article titled, “Exercising to Relax.” What up with that? Did you see it?
- Bob ---
Yes, it’s from Harvard Health Publishing and it’s about reducing stress through exercise so in turn when you exercise you reduce stress and a reduction of stress in your life allows you to relax more.
Here’s how it works…
Your body responds to exercise, which is a form of stress on the body, but your body will take the focus off your stress to the stress of exercise because exercise is good for your body in so many ways. As your body pulls your attention and the attention of your organs, etc. then the tight squeeze of stress is diminished and you feel better and more relaxed.
There’s also something about exercise that doesn’t require a lot of thinking, cyclical types of movement – walking, running, swimming, and cycling. That’s not to say pickleball, tennis, basketball and the like are bad, just exercises that are cyclical seem to have a greater effect on relaxation.
Exercise also increases your breathing which helps to reduce stress by bringing additional oxygen into the equation of daily living.
Exercise can be a mental exercise as you think about achievement of goals and the celebration of goals met rather than the multitude of stressful things that bombard you on a daily basis.
One more benefit of exercise in reducing stress thereby bringing in more relaxation and that is the activation and relaxation of muscles. When you are non-active, the muscle activation is relatively small, when however you exercise, even just walking you activate muscles that will respond in the call for movement then will relax when you stop.
JT’s Comments
Bob’s final comment – we say it often but it takes discipline to exercise your way to relaxation but the benefits are great in relieving stress….
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
