BB – We are talking today about “Considering The Past”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: If we give no consideration to the past, we’ll make the same mistakes, just as you see happened in the historical books of the Bible. On the other hand, by studying history we see the hand of God and can be encouraged because God does not change.
Romans 15:4 (ESV) — 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
TODAY --- “Considering the Past”

JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
What are some benefits of considering the past?
- Bob
God does not change. Circumstances may be different but the needs are basically the same so we can know that if God demonstrated His grace and power in the past, He can do it again. Every time you read of God providing in the midst of an impassible situation, or God showing great mercy to His people when they call upon Him – you can be encouraged that God hears and answers prayer. He does not change.
We gain great knowledge about God, what pleases God, and how dependency upon Him is the best way to live as we read the narraties in the Bible. Unfortunately, we may not get that from our family history, but then again we may. (((Bob’s dad))) ((John Warburten))
Again… Romans 15:4 (ESV) — 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
What is an appropriate mental strategy we need to apply to appreciate history, especially the historical books of Scripture?
- Bob
2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV) — 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
- It’s all profitable!
Proverbs 2:6 (ESV) — 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
Proverbs 2:10 (ESV) — 10 for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
Proverbs 12:1 (ESV) — 1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
What is the minimum amount of training to hold your fitness level when the seasons change?
- Bob --- An article by Jim Rutberg from the CTS website concluded that doing something is better than doing nothing …. BUT it’s best to include some intensity, some volume and keep up frequency of exercise if possible. HERE’S WHY….
- Keep in mind that the real purpose of taking time off or changing the course of things is to refresh BUT if you will minimize your decline in performance you will make greater gains when you return.
What is you reduce frequency of exercise?
Studies show that an athlete who trained six days per week dropped to just two days per week lost very little BUT …that depended upon the shape of the person and how intense the workouts were and that at least one of the remaining workouts kept up the intensity. But it’s encouraging that he went from 6 to 2 for 5 weeks and lost very little.
WHAT ABOUT VOLUME?
Studies demonstrated that when the volume of exercise was reduced for 4 weeks there was little difference as long as there was a consistent amount of intense workouts. The study by the way took a 40 minute workout session and cut to 26 or 13 minutes.
Again it should be noted that this reduction was for 4 weeks and did include some intense workouts.
WHAT ABOUT INTENSITY?
As noted as long as one workout, albeit shortened is intense as the person would hold prior to the break weeks then nothing was lost.
The Bottom line is to know that breaks are good and can be a time of rebuilding, even though they include trips to ‘Grandma’s house for those family feasts. If you want to maintain your fitiness and come back strong, cutting back on frequency, volume, and intensity, may be a good thing as long as you have something in the same intensity. In other words don’t take completely off and expect to pick up where you were. That could mean a total rebuild which will take some time.
JT comments
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to make the adjustments necessary to use time off for rebuilding without losing fitness. d
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
