BB – We are talking today about “Motivation From Joy”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: There is always a need to recheck our motivation, but when your motivation is the joy of the Lord. You are really motivated.
Nehemiah 8:10 (ESV) — 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

- JT – This is the PowerBreak Podcast, I’m JT along with Bob Brubaker and this is the –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…
JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
This motivation from joy sounds like it’s leading toward a “DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY” kind of life. Maybe you should explain.
- Bob
Don’t Worry Be happy – is the motivation of “just put a smile on your face” and everything will be alright. This is far different! This motivation from joy has it’s roots in an appreciation for all that God has done through the Lord Jesus Christ. You might be filled with worry, doubt, and discouragement and it’s NOT a matter of just put on a happy face and all will be right, rather it’s taking time to look at the blessings of God – blessings in the past, the present, and the future then after focusing on that… It should change the way you see and face life.
This is the practical side of theology… viewing election, predestination, redemption, calling, regeneration, and glorification as more than just terms – these are descriptions of blessings that God has established, is performing, and has for His children.
As 1 Peter says then, we greatly rejoice – even when things are tough.
1 Peter 1:6–9 (ESV) — 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
What is an appropriate mental strategy we need to apply to focus and apply the joy of the Lord to be our strength.
- Bob
It comes back to reviewing what fills our minds. If we fill our minds with the world and the problems of living in the world then we’ll be less motivated to serve God.
When we fill our minds with the word of God, and focus upon God and the multitude of blessings that flow from Him, then it makes all the difference.
1 Peter 1:13 (ESV) — 13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
Let’s talk about Zone 2 training.
- Bob --- (JUMPS IN QUICKLY WITH What say you JT? YOU’VE STUDIED ON THIS AND YOU PRACTICE IT
JT comments
BOB wraps with…
Benefits of Zone 2 Heart Rate Training.
- Increase in the number of mitochondria
- Increase in mitochondrial efficiency
- Increase in “metabolic flexibility”
- Lower resting heart rate
- A decrease in blood pressure
- Lower risk of injury
- Improvesinsulin resistance
- Improve your ability to run/cycle longer
- Improve your resilience and ability to deal with increasing load
- Improve your Zone 4,5 function/performance
- Improved longevity
Heart rate: When you are in Zone 2 your heart rate is somewhere between 65-75% of your maximum heart rate. Using your heart rate (HR) is probably your best way to identify what zone you are in. For an accurate assessment, we need to know your maximum HR and your resting HR.
Breathing: If you can speak easily and in full sentences without having to pause at all you are probably in Zone 1 or 2. If you can breathe through your nose for the entire run, you are likely in zones 1 and 2. If you can speak or sing, but need to pause occasionally to breathe you are probably in Zone 2. If you cannot speak more than a few words before you need to pause, you are in Zone 3 and above. The above may hold true for most people. But as I alluded to earlier, for many of us, we are still capable of holding an uninterrupted conversation well into zone 3. By all means, if you can “hear” yourself breathe, you are not in zone 2.
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to… train most of your training in zone 2 training but the benefits far outweigh anything that seems uncomfortable.
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
