- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
Many times people look for meaning in trying circumstances and come to the conclusion that God is chastening them. Is that always true?
- Bob
Let’s break it down and see if that is the case.
- The chastening or sometimes called “chastisement” in Hebrews 12 can be translated, “SON TRAINING.”
Hebrews 12:5–11 (ESV) — 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Romans 8:28–29 (ESV) — 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
- God is NOT a child abuser….
Psalm 103:8–10 (ESV) — 8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.
- What kind of God would He be if He did correct us and not let us know why He is doing it.
John 16:8 (ESV) — 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
- God is actually using the good and the bad to bring us to the knowledge of Himself.
Romans 11:22 (ESV) — 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
DISCUSSION
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
What is an appropriate mental strategy should we have in our desire to find meaning behind the things that happen to us and around us?
- Bob
First and foremost - DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR HEART…. (EMOTIONS DECEIVE US)
Jeremiah 17:9–10 (ESV) — 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Secondly, in order to find meaning behind things in life we need to be in tune with God. As in “in tune” on a friendly basis …. As in communicating with Him regularly as in reading and studying His word and in touch with Him in prayer.
Amos 8:11 (ESV) — 11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.
Thirdly, examine ourselves regularly and often.
2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV) — 5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
1 Corinthians 11:27–29 (ESV) — 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Discussion
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
Let’s talk about the recent study that linked walking regularly with a decrease in back pain. What’s up with that?
- Bob ---
- Walking is an effective, low-cost intervention for preventing and managing low back pain. Recent studies show it can significantly extend pain-free periods. And reduce recurrence by up to 43%.
- Regular walking is as beneficial as other forms of exercise for chronic low back pain, improving pain levels, as well as the quality of life.
- Walking offers. Numerous other health benefits…
- They even found that moderate level walking is more beneficial for longevity than vigorous exercise.
- You should aim for 7K to 12K steps per day for optimal health without going into overexertion.
What say you JT?
JT comments
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to start, stick to, maybe even tweek a walking program to increase or possibly decrease for maximum benefit BUT the results are tremendous.
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
