BB –  We are talking today about  MINIMUM DAILY REQUIREMENTS

So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))

  1. Bob – POINT:  Life is much more than living at the minimum. In fact when you look at what Jesus pointed out was the greatest commandment – it’s all consuming. That’s the minimum.

Matthew 22:36–40 (ESV) — 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

  1. JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

Why do we as Christians look for the minimum requirement in serving God?

  1. Bob

It’s human nature to want to just get by.

One old preacher said that question posed to Jesus regarding the greatest commandment was all about that … as they were looking for the one they they need not miss.

It’s like in college when the professor is explaining something and someone asks the question… “Is this on the test” as if to say this going to be required of me to know this?

Adam had a minimum requirement – not to eat of the tree in the garden and he messed up.

What Jesus gave us in the greatest commandment is quite a presentation of what is minimally important in serving God.

Love Him with all that is in you. In other words all in… and to love your neighbor as your self. This is the one and only way we can fulfill the ten commandments, which of course is impossible on our own, we must have the help of God…

John 15:5 (ESV) — 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Minimum daily requirement then is stay close to and rely upon the Lord Jesus Christ, WHO by the way is our righteousness as He fulfilled the law and by Him and Him alone we are accepted by God. Therefore….

Romans 12:1–2 (ESV) — 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

DISCUSSION

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

What is an appropriate mental strategy to getting away from the minimalist attitude?

  1. Bob

First – why do we want the minimum in anything? Do you look to give the minimum on your job – you won’t last long? (((vs. the Rebecca principle)))

Secondly – why cut yourself short?

Thirdly – Think of the loss in the minimum.

Discussion

  1. Third question … Turning to the Physical

Let’s continue talking minimum and talk about minimalist training.

Is that good or bad?

  1. Bob ---
  • Minimalist training is a new way of thinking about training for long distance events such as a marathon or ironman triathlon or even an ultra marathon, or … (you get the drift)
  • Minimalist training cuts in half basically what used to be the norm for training. For instance to run a marathon consisted of working up to and including several 20 mile runs for the 26.2 mile race. But the new wave of thinking is to work smarter rather than longer. Which means you may get one 20 mile run in but most work is shorter.
  • The Reasoning is simple most people that get all the long runs in training end up going to the event very tired. Why not go to the event fresh and ready?

  • I’ve never done minimalist training but I know people who have and have had great results.
  • I’d advise studying up or getting a coach to help you as we all might go real minimalist and not come close to preparing for the event.

What say you JT?

JT comments

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to apply yourself to diligent minimalist training but the results could be very good. It’s not just cut back training, it’s training with a purpose including the. Need to do what is required in a minimal way.

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
