- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
Why is forgetting God’s teaching so easy? And what can we do to avoid it?
- Bob & JT discuss
Somewhat similar to what we talked about on this podcast…
Forgetting God’s teaching – His commandments comes easy for us because of the pull of the world, the flesh, and the devil.
– the Christian life is a battle ---- the Bible describes the battle as with the world, the flesh, and the devil.
Ephesians 6:10–12 (ESV) — 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Everything from the attractions of the world ----
1 John 2:15–16 (ESV) — 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
The pull of the flesh = our old nature that wants to be fulfilled instead of disciplined
Galatians 5:16–17 (ESV) — 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
Romans 7:19 (ESV) — 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
Romans 7:23–25 (ESV) — 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
SO… what can you do to avoid forgetting --- keep God’s law – His word ever before you and discipline yourself to read, study, memorize, meditate upon, and above all – apply God’s word.
Psalm 119:16 (ESV) — 16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Psalm 119:83 (ESV) — 83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
Psalm 119:93 (ESV) — 93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life.
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally bring ourselves to this daily discipline that keeps us from forgetting God’s word?
- Bob & JT discuss
Christian Fellowship is so important.
Being part --- of a local church body is not an option – we need the fellowship of each other and the help from one another in helping us to stay disciplined….
Proverbs 27:17 (ESV) — 17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
When you are crunched for time, can you still train for high intensity performance?
- Bob & JT discuss
You can but you really have to be disciplined and understand that your training will not come close to the pros that have more time. Here are some keys to training for high performance when you are time restricted…
- You may have to squeeze time between work, family, church, and other things --- but schedule your workouts when you can THEN be disciplined in being consistent.
- You may not be able to get the volume of time in your workouts but you can still make sure you get an appropriate of intensity. That does not mean you go at all your workouts at race pace but you make sure you get time for hard labor of intensity regularly.
- Assess your data – be disciplined to look back at your power, your intensity, your HR, and other variables and grade yourself on how well you kept yourself where you wanted to be in each workout.
- Make some clear expectations as you map out your workouts for the week. In other words – plan your week then work your plan and make sure you have clear expectations of gains… so you aren’t operating with a loser’s limp… because you don’t have time.
Anything final thoughts on this JT?
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to have a plan for consistency, intensity, analysis, and expectatons… but it will pay off as you make the most of your time as crunched as it is.
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
