BB –  We are talking today about  “The Place Of Asking And Receiving”

So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))

  1. Bob – POINT: Even though the Lord Jesus Christ made it plain that God knows what we have need of before we ask… still he taught us to pray and to A-S-K

Matthew 7:7–8 (ESV) — 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

  1. JT ------ OK THEN LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW –  as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

  1. JT This is the PowerBreak Podcast, I’m JT along with Bob Brubaker and this is the –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…

  1. JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

If God already knows what we need, and He is sovereign in giving us what we need, then why must we pray?

  1. Bob & JT discuss

That’s the question of mankind, which means we are looking at prayer as an opportunity to inform God, rather than to draw close to God. When we are merely informing God, we are very impatient because we want our answer now…

When we are drawing close to God as He uses the means of the call to prayer, the felt need to pray,  the response of others requesting we pray on their behalf, etc. Whatever means God uses to get us to pray – it’s not for us to inform Him, rather to draw near to Him.

Understand that prayer in itself is very humbling because we are asking for help. We are admitting that we don’t have it all together. An attitude, by the way, that is pleasing to God.

Isaiah 57:15 (ESV) — 15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

So consider again …

1 Peter 5:5–7 (ESV) — 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Nothing is more pleasing to God than an attitude of total dependency upon Him, whereas nothing is more repugnant than an attitude of pride and independency toward Him.

Remember the words of Jesus….

John 15:5 (ESV) — 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Best illustrated ….

Luke 18:9–14 (ESV) — 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Jesus in His teaching on prayer in the sermon on the Mount included a reminder that God knows everything we need before we ask…. Then He also included the command to pray and gave the instruction in what is called “The Lord’s prayer.”

Matthew 6:7–9 (ESV) — 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

How can we mentally wrap our minds around the concept that prayer is drawing close to God instead of prayer being a matter of seeking answers?

  1. Bob & JT discuss

Realize that God is in control of all things. By His providence He cares for His creation and His people. He, however desires fellowship from all of us who have declared their allegiance to Him and called upon Him for salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Since we were designed to have fellowship with God --- but that fellowship was broken, and we can only have fellowship with God now through the Lord Jesus Christ. A major piece of that fellowship today is when we spend time with Him in prayer.

Stepping back then, not only does He command us to pray, the work of the Holy Spirit prompts our hearts to want to pray, the needs of life demand we seek answers but the main aspect of our praying is spending uninterrupted time with God in prayer.

Psalm 37:4 (ESV) — 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Isaiah 58:14 (ESV) — 14 then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

  1. Third question … Turning to the Physical

Let’s talk about using a heart rate monitor. What do you know about it?

  1. Bob & JT discuss
Decide whether you want to use it as a thermometer or a thermostat

To estimate your maximum age-related heart rate, subtract your age from 220. For example, for a 50-year-old person, the estimated maximum age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220 – 50 years = 170 beats per minute (bpm).

Zone 1 (recovery/easy)

55%-65% HR max

Zone 2 (aerobic/base) 65%-75% HR max
Zone 3 (tempo) 80%-85% HR max
Zone 4 (lactate threshold) 85%-88% HR max
Zone 5 (anaerobic) 90% HR max and above

Anything final thoughts on this JT?

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to monitor your exercise with a HR monitor but it is very good to get an accurate reading on your level of exertion as well as your needed recovery.

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
