  1. JT This is the PowerBreak Podcast, I’m JT along with Bob Brubaker and this is the  –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…

  1. JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

Explain what you mean when on one hand you said that the qualities that Peter describes, that he says we should make every effort to have in our lives --- those qualities you said the Holy Spirit must produce as fruit - so where is our diligent effort?

  1. Bob & JT discuss

Galatians 5:19–23 (ESV) — 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:24–26 (ESV) — 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

John 15:1–2 (ESV) — 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

John 15:5 (ESV) — 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

2 Peter 1:5–8 (ESV) — 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

What is the best way to “gear up our mind” to apply ourselves to being diligent about bearing fruit as you have described?

  1. Bob & JT discuss

The old “carrot and stick” adage is quite applicable.

Carrot wise -- think of the benefits of fruit bearing….

If that doesn’t do it… think of the ill effects of being “unfruitful”

2 Peter 1:9 (ESV) — 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

  1. Third question … Turning to the Physical

I know it’s hard to practice when you live in Florida but many people around the country are forced into taking time off from their sport at this time of the year …OR very soon due to weather changes. So what are the physical advantages of taking a break and in even losing fitness????

  1. Bob & JT discuss

All based upon the cycles of life in that you work hard, push hard, and try hard then you take a needed break when it’s time to rebuild.

It’s not brain surgery - in fact God established the principle in the Sabbath as a day of rest, rebuilding, and spiritual renewal.

Don’t underestimate the power of a real off-season — it will make you a better athlete next year.

Matt Fitzgerald from Training Peaks writes in a recent article about taking and OFF season break…

There are times when losing some fitness now helps you gain fitness later so that you come out ahead in the long run. One of those times is the early off-season period (in other words, right about now) when you’ve just completed your last big race of the year, your fitness level is at or near an all-time high, and you may be sorely tempted to “keep the momentum going”. Instead of giving in to this temptation, however, I advise you to do just the opposite — not by just accepting the need to give away some of that hard-earned fitness, but also by embracing the process and even enjoying it.

The early off-season period can be a lot of fun if you choose to indulge this part of yourself. Take pleasure in eating dessert more often, binge-watching your favorite television programs, and perhaps even gaining a couple of pounds. You’re not letting yourself go — you’re looking out for your long-term athletic interests by appearing to do the opposite for a short period of time.

Anything final thoughts on this JT?

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to learn how to take time off and what to do in the time out phase of training… AND OF COURSE when to get back to the grind. That takes discipline to actually train by a long term schedule and follow it.

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
