BB – We are talking today about … “The Gathering”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind?
- Bob – POINT: There are many mentions of the word gathering in the Bible but perhaps one that we miss is the concept of “gathering” at the point of death…
Genesis 25:8 (ESV) — 8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
Genesis 35:29 (ESV) — 29 And Isaac breathed his last, and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
Genesis 49:33 (ESV) — 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
I know people don’t like to talk about death but it seems that God has prepared us for death which is certain for all of us by presenting this concept of “gathering” at the point of death so explain that some more.
- Bob & JT discuss
Genesis 25:8 (ESV) — 8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
Genesis 35:29 (ESV) — 29 And Isaac breathed his last, and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
Genesis 49:33 (ESV) — 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
Psalm 116:15 (ESV) — 15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
Luke 16:19–23 (ESV) — 19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.
Psalm 23:4 (ESV) — 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Isaiah 40:11 (ESV) — 11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
Hebrews 2:14–15 (ESV) — 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
Romans 8:38–39 (ESV) — 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
What about this concept of “gathering” is important to wrap our minds around to go forward in the race of life?
- Bob & JT discuss
Isaiah 54:7–8 (ESV) — 7 For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you. 8 In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.
Hebrews 12:6–11 (ESV) — 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
- (JT) Third Question …. From the physical side of life…
Almost everyone is wearing a heart rate monitor of some sort today with most smart watches … or as you use your WHOOP… what does all this information about heart rate mean and how should we use this information?
- Bob and JT discuss…
- Most people just notice it as a point of information …
- The true use of a heart rate monitor is to treat it as a thermostat rather than a thermometer.
- Thermometer gives you the temperature whereas a thermostat takes note of the temperature to make adjustments.
- HR – notice your resting HR in the morning. Keep track of it and if it’s high overnight or in the morning you are not rested from the previous day
- As you workout notice what your HR is doing – if it jumps excessively then you need to back off.
- There are HR levels in which you train and it’s important to stay in those zones.
- It’s also important to take note of how fast your HR returns to resting…
Anything thoughts on this JT?
Taking note of your HR as you workout and using your HR monitor as a thermostat will help you in the long run but it takes discipline to make sure you don’t ignore the information.
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline ….
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
