Romans 5:3–5 (ESV) — 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

  1. JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

How can we anticipate and even prepare for times of strain or difficultly?

  1. Bob & JT discuss

Psalm 34:19 (ESV) — 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

John 16:33 (ESV) — 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

2 Timothy 3:12 (ESV) — 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

James 1:2–4 (ESV) — 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

How can we mentally “hold on” when we are in the midst of stain?

  1. Bob & JT discuss

  • Hold to the promises of God
  • Seek to encourage others – especially those you know are going through strain
  • Gratitude

  1. (JT) Third Question …. From the physical side of life…

Since pain in strain is part of physical training – what are some ways to increase tolerance to pain?

  1. Bob and JT discuss…
  • Short and Long Accelerations – running or cycling include some short accelerations in the warmup (20 – 30 seconds) then some 2 to 8:00 accelerations during your ride or run. The accelerations are the pain threshold but knowing it won’t last long keeps you going through the pain. (JT mountain climbing effort)
  • Stretch intervals – running or cycling – (maximum effort that you can go for 2:00) then back to recovery pace. Again knowing it won’t last forever helps you work through it.

JT’s list

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline ….

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
