BB – We are talking today about … “Avoiding Decision Fatigue” … So JT – What do you think of when you hear the expression, “Decision Fatigue” AND…. Have you ever experienced “decision fatigue?”
JT answers and discussion
- Bob – POINT: Decision fatigue is a real phenomenon today as we are required to make decision after decision throughout the day. But if we have not made some important decisions ahead of time in the way of commitment then we’ll fall into the trap of being tossed around in ways we do not want to go, simply because we were at a point in which we couldn’t decide. It’s a very biblical principle.
Luke 9:23 (ESV) — 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
That is a call for commitment…
So today it’s the consideration of Avoiding Decision Fatigue…
JT ------ OK THEN LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW – as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
Do you really think Adam Eve and others sinned in the Bible out of decision fatigue or was it just succumbing to temptation?
- Bob
Succumbing to temptation is actually giving into the temptation because the commitment to resist the temptation has been neglected so when a decision needs to be made to resist – the person couldn’t decide and when you are in that moment, we are calling “decision fatigue” that is when you just fall into the easy way out and it normally ends up as the wrong choice.
I used the accounts of those who sinned in the Bible simply to make the point that we all fall prey to wrong choices at times when we are most vulnerable UNLESS we stick to commitments that we have made. For the Christian it’s the commitment to Christ and His word. So when you are tired or feel beaten up and the temptation to satisfy your flesh… in whatever manner that comes to you… YOU CAN RESIST if you have made the decision as a COMMITMENT ahead of time. Because those moments of decision fatigue will hit all of us.
I used the example of Joshua in the blog…
Joshua 24:14–15 (ESV) — 14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
Would you say that you avoid falling prey to decision fatigue by making choices ahead of time before you are exhausted?
- Bob
PRECISELY!
This is exactly what you and Amy do in your adherence to eating well. You have made the choice and you do what needs to be done ahead of time, like having good food on hand, and by having a meal plan in place so that you don’t have to make a choice when you are hungry and tired – you’ve already made the choice.
Likewise when you make commitments to the Lord, or the local church – you don’t have to make a decision when you are tired or vulnerable as you’ve already made that so then it’s a matter of living by your commitments and taking the steps to live out those commitments …. LIKE WE SEE IN JOSHUA as mentioned earlier.
- (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….
Let’s talk about interval workouts. (this makes me tired thinking about this)
Which is better – short workouts OR medium workouts
Say on a bike – 3 sets of 13 by 30 second intervals with 15 sec recovery
OR 4 sets of 5 minutes intervals with a 2 minute 30 second recovery
Of course that could be adapted for running, walking, or swimming… the principle is a short or medium length interval where you push it for the prescribed time.
BB & JT discuss ---
- Actually according to a recent study – the shorter intervals won
Here’s why…
- Shorter intervals allowed for more time at higher intensity as the longer you go the more you give into fatigue and begin to drop the effort
- Shorter intervals allow you to improve your lactate tolerance because you are able to push through it for the short period time
- Mentally the shorter intervals reduce the feeling of threat because you know the interval is short so you are more apt to push through
Does that mean you should only do shorter intervals – NO said the author of the study – short intervals have their purpose BUT it’s also good to include the medium intervals and LONG intervals to stay balanced.
JT has words of wisdom and experience….
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline ….
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
