BB – We are talking today about … a mindset reset…
Have you ever been envious of another person? (if so who and what?)
JT answers
- Bob – POINT: Envy is closely related to covetousness which is sin. In Psalm 73, Asaph admits to being envious of the wicked which was a change in mindset for him and was a real indicator he needed a mindset reset….
Psalm 73:2–3 (ESV) — 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
Sadly, many people fall into that trap but never recognize the need for or the help that God provides to get a mindset reset…
- JT ------ OK THEN LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW – as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
How does this envious mindset get a hold on us and what can we do?
- Bob
Genesis 3:1 (ESV) — 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
1 Peter 5:8 (ESV) — 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Ephesians 6:10–13 (ESV) — 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Psalm 73:16–17 (ESV) — 16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, 17 until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.
Psalm 73:25–26 (ESV) — 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How can we mentally get a handle on what is happening to us as we fall into the trap?
- Bob
Psalm 73:1–12 (ESV) — 1 Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4 For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. 5 They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. 7 Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. 8 They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. 9 They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. 10 Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. 11 And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” 12 Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.
- (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….
Let’s talk about the benefits of having a coach by looking at the pitfalls of trying to “self coach.”
- BB & JT discuss ---
Whenever we talk with self-coached athletes who are struggling with improving their performance, it often comes down to one or more of the following issues:
- They struggle to fit training into their busy schedule
- They don’t know what workouts to do and how much volume is right
- They usually get the balance of training and recovery wrong
- They lack accountability and miss workouts when their motivation hits a low point
- They don’t know how to navigate injuries and avoid getting them in the first place
- They miss the mark when fueling their workout and events
What say you JT?
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline ….
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
