– how do you find yourself battling with self-sabotage?

JT answers

  1. Bob – POINT: Nobody likes to admit that they battle with self-sabotage but the reality is that many times our “giving up” or even “self-inflicting” problems on ourselves is based on our losing sight of the call and the help to accomplish what God is calling us to do… but we are not alone. God dealt with Jeremiah’s self-sabotaging his ministry in a way of a “wake up” challenge…

Jeremiah 12:5 (ESV) — 5 “If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses? And if in a safe land you are so trusting, what will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?”

And so He deals with us often to get us out of the self-sabotaging state of mind…

  1. JT ------ OK THEN LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW –  as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

  1. JT This is the PowerBreak Podcast, I’m JT along with Bob Brubaker and this is the  –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…

  1. JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

Explain the concept of “self-sabotage” and how that is a problem for us and how do can get out of it.

  1. Bob

Typical definition….

Behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems in daily life and interferes with long-standing goals. The most common self-sabotaging behaviors include procrastination, self-medication with drugs or alcohol, comfort eating, and forms of self-injury such as cutting.

People aren't always aware that they are sabotaging themselves, and connecting a behavior to self-defeating consequences is no guarantee that a person will disengage from it. Still, it is possible to overcome almost any form of self-sabotage.

As I referenced in the blog …. That Jeremiah, the prophet in the OT was engaged in what seemed to be “self-sabotage” in that he was willing to give up so God came to him with a challenge.

Jeremiah 12:1 (ESV) — 1 Righteous are you, O Lord, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive?

Jeremiah 12:5 (ESV) — 5 “If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses? And if in a safe land you are so trusting, what will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?”

That’s the word of God… it’s meant to get our attention …

2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV) — 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

2 Timothy 4:2 (ESV) — 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

Ephesians 5:14 (ESV) — 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Go back to the call or the reason we set out to do what we were doing when we seemed to interrupt things and consider quitting.

Go back to the total reliance upon God for help… and when you feel like giving in, dig deeper in reliance upon God for help… it’s not a matter of pulling ourselves up … rather a matter of relying deeper upon Him and staying in close communication with Him…

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

What do we do mentally to avoid falling into the trap of self-sabotage?

  1. Bob

Proverbs 23:7 (KJV 1900) — 7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) — 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

GRATITUDE, PRAISE,

Romans 15:4 (ESV) — 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

  1. (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….

Let’s talk about heart health. Too many times we don’t think about heart health until there is a problem. What can all of us do for a healthy heart.

  1. BB & JT discuss ---

  • Reduce stress – silent killer
  • Exercise
  • Quit smoking and avoid second hand smoke
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Plan your meals so you fill yourself with nutrient filled food, rather than fillers
  • Avoid overeating
  • Get enough sleep

What say you JT?

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline ….

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
