JT answers

  1. Bob – POINT: Doing the right thing is not always convenient, in fact it rarely is but Jesus calls us to a higher plain of service than convenience… called “self denial.”

Luke 9:23 (ESV) — 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

How is convenience an idol?

  1. Bob

What is an idol?

Anything that controls us … the way we think, the way we act.

When we give into an idol in our lives, it’s amazing how we lose the sense of urgency in serving God. Kind of like what He says in Hosea…

Hosea 4:17 (ESV) — 17 Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone.

Think of how that dominants of “convenience” takes over…

First we turn down doing something because our schedules are too full –

We resist doing something God calls us to do because it’s uncomfortable…

YET … Jesus said that to serve Him is a life of “self denial.”

Luke 9:23 (ESV) — 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Nothing about convenience there…  but the rewards are great…

Walking with Him and learning from Him…

Matthew 11:29–30 (ESV) — 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Amos 3:3 (ESV) — 3 “Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

Let’s talk about that “Rebecca Principle” and how that can charge us mentally to avoid the idol of convenience.

  1. Bob

  • Reference to Genesis “And then Some” principle from Rebecca
  • What she did “extra” and what awaited her
  • Principle for life

Think of how the “and then some” OR Rebecca principle when applied to serving the Lord Jesus Christ puts away the “inconvenience Idol” as you deny yourself of the Just getting by attitude to do what He requires and then some…

  1. (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….

Let’s talk about Olympic inspiration… as we viewed the various events last month from the Olympic games in Tokyo, it was easy to get inspired to “get up and get going on meeting some physical goal” even as we saw the multitude of exercise companies taking advantage of that in advertising… So what can we say to those who have been inspired to take up a sport, or be more diligent in a given sport, or even just get off the couch?

  1. BB & JT discuss ---

Of course I’m anxious to hear your take on this.. but here goes…

  1. For a new sport or getting off the couch – learn all you can about the sport, watch some videos of those who excel, learn all you can about the training, acquire the equipment necessary, and find a coach or at least some coaching tips on line… THEN write out some realistic goals … and some basic training  workouts… ((keep it simple)) and add difficulty and technical stuff as you build momentum.

What say you JT… You really took up a new sport in Mt. Biking…

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline ….

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life

Closing statement Bob…. “check out today’s show notes at bobbrubaker.com and click on the PowerBreak podcast – today’s show is 158.
