BB – How do you avoid being a “slow belly?”

BB:  Taken from the book of Titus – chapter 1:12 in the KJV it reads….

Titus 1:12 (KJV 1900) — 12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

Titus 1:12 (ESV) — 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

So lazy Gluttons…

  1. Bob – POINT: Without discipline … we can easily fall into the trap of being “slow bellies” or lazy gluttons today… No wonder Paul disciplined himself….

1 Corinthians 9:27 (ESV) — 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

  1. JTQuestion ONE FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

 

What’s so wrong with being a “slow belly” and what can we do to avoid it?

First: let’ consider what Jesus gave us as a prerequisite for being His disciple…

Luke 9:23 (ESV) — 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

We know that we are not saved by our works… but by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ…

Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV) — 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

But we also know that to be a follower of Jesus Christ, who exemplified the epitome of discipline… doing the will of the Father all the way to the cross…

Hebrews 12:2–3 (ESV) — 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

So a disciplined or “self denying” lifestyle is fitting for a Christian. Hence Paul’s words in 1 Cor 9….

1 Corinthians 9:27 (ESV) — 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

 

Think about it on the negative side.. as to what God has to say about laziness and gluttony… often called “sloth” or … slack in the book of Proverbs,,

, Proverbs 15:19 (ESV) — 19 The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway.

Proverbs 18:9 (ESV) — 9 Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.

Proverbs 21:25 (ESV) — 25 The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor.

Proverbs 22:10 (ESV) — 10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out, and quarreling and abuse will cease.

Proverbs 22:13 (ESV) — 13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!”

Proverbs 24:30–34 (ESV) — 30 I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, 31 and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. 32 Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 34 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

Let’s face it… we are accustomed to a great deal of “ease” and “comfort” in our society… so being disciplined is a hard trait to find because … we long to get back to our ease and comfort.

But the more we practice discipline in one area of life, we find it fits nicely into other areas of life and brings a greater sense of joy and satisfaction.

That is what Paul is bringing up to Titus.. as he goes on in the book… in chapter two..

Titus 2:11–14 (ESV) — 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT” –

 

How do we get away from this tendency to laziness?

Practice discipline in just one area of life and watch it spread…

1 Corinthians 9:20–27 (ESV) — 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

BB – I heard a podcast by a professional ultra distance runner who happened to be a former gymnast and who said she jumped into an obstacle race and found it to be very refreshing …. In fact recommended it to be part of a training kick.

You’ve done those races… what did it do for you?
