  1. JTQuestion ONE

Why is it we all have a problem of saying NO… even when we know it’s something to which we shouldn’t commit ourselves?

  1. Bob

EGO!

James 5:12 (ESV) — 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

PRESUMPTION

Ecclesiastes 5:4–5 (ESV) — 4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

PEER PRESSURE

Ephesians 5:15–17 (ESV) — 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  • Have a plan and work your plan

John 6:38 (ESV) — 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

  1. JT – Question Two… What is a good mental strategy for making sure we live up to our commitments?

  1. Bob

You are as good as your word…

Psalm 138:2 (ESV) — 2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

Titus 1:2 (ESV) — 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began

Hebrews 6:18–20 (ESV) — 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Isaiah 46:11 (ESV) — 11 calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.

  1. (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….

How can we avoid overcommitting to workouts?

  1. Bob

  • Don’t go by someone else’ workout
  • Get a coach
  • Even though committing to others is a good motivator – check it out before you do
  • Cut yourself some slack – life often gets in the way
  • Realize you are not as young as you were

What say you?

JT answers

1 Corinthians 9:27 (ESV) — 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

  1. Bob’s final comment

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
