  • BB – I doubt it but have you ever been accused of being too soft?
    • JT - (((answer)))
  • JT – How about you – have you ever been “out of shape?”
    • BB (((answer)))

  1. Bob – POINT: It’s really easy to get “soft” today because of the lack of constant physical labor --- so we have to be disciplined to be active enough to avoid it… BUT as we always say here on the PowerBreak podcast – discipline in one aspect of life leads to discipline in all aspects AND LIKEWISE – a lack of discipline in one area of life leads to being soft in all areas of life.

Take the apostle Paul who feared “going soft” in his walk with the Lord…

1 Corinthians 9:24–27 (ESV) — 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

  1. JT --- This is important stuff … so

  1. JT – “So here we go… in our time for WHAT ABOUT THIS…  –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…

  1. JTQuestion ONE

Let’s talk about “going soft” spiritually. Two questions – how do we recognize spiritual “softness” and how do we recover?

  1. Bob

Nobody wants to be accused of being “soft.” What would you say if your doc said, “JT, you are getting soft?” Likewise nobody wants their pastor, elders, or even someone close to them to tell them they are showing signs of “spiritual softness” so they ought to get in shape.

BUT… thank God for anyone who would be brave enough to challenge us with such a question… OTHERWISE we are admonished to constantly question or examine ourselves…

2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV) — 5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Philippians 3:13–15 (ESV) — 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

Recovering from softness… means getting back to the important spiritual disciplines…. Having a plan, making a schedule, keeping some accountability

  1. JT – Question Two…

What does “going soft” mentally look like? And again, how does one recover?

  1. Bob

Rate your drive or determination in life? Are you one who starts but never finishes things?

Question the why you might be soft mentally?

  • Overcommitted / multitasking is not good
  • Lack of motivation
  • Easily Distracted

Decide what is important and prioritize… make a schedule and block out distractions

Feed your motivation and your mind…

Philippians 4:8–9 (ESV) — 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

  • Discipline makes the Difference in all aspects of life

  1. (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….

How can a person recognize and what do you do when you are turning soft physically?

  1. Bob

  • Look in the mirror… listen to your doctor … test yourself

James 1:23–25 (ESV) — 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

Like the mental … make a decision that enough is enough, write down your motivation, develop a plan of action (long haul), test yourself regularly to mark improvement, and make sure you are locked into a system of accountability…

What say you JT?

  1. JT: answer

  1. Bob’s final comment

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
