“Background and History of The Podcast”

  • BB – Where do you turn when you need a refuge?
    • JT - (((answer)))
  • JT – When things get tough where do you turn?
    • BB (((answer)))

  1. Bob – POINT: We all need a refuge or a place to turn and Psalm 46 gives us a great consolation….

Psalm 46:1 (ESV) — 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:7 (ESV) — 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Psalm 46:10–11 (ESV) — 10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Actually, did you know that Psalm 46 was the basis of Martin Luther’s hymn, A mighty Fortress…

He actually wrote it to encourage his friends who were facing great difficulty as they stood for God’s truth…

  1. JT --- LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW –  as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

  1. JT – “So here we go… in our time for WHAT ABOUT THIS…  –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…

  1. JTQuestion ONE

Why was the hymn “A Mighty Fortress” so important to Martin Luther and the other reformers?

  1. Bob

2 Peter 3:1 (ESV) — 1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,

Philippians 4:8 (ESV) — 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Directed their minds to remember Psalm 46….

Psalm 46:1 (ESV) — 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:10–11 (ESV) — 10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

  1. JTQuestion ONE continued…

I gather that would be the same for us… to be reminded of God’s faithfulness and we can find refuge in Him as our fortress.

  1. Bob

  • Precisely

We all need to be reminded of spiritual truths over and over…

We never graduate to a time we don’t need the reminders…

Hence we encourage one another as we sing…

Ephesians 5:19 (ESV) — 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,

as we pray and hear others pray…

1 Corinthians 14:16 (ESV) — 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?

as we read the word, and hear the word of God preached…

2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV) — 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 4:2 (ESV) — 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

Hebrews 10:25 (ESV) — 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

  1. JT – From a mental standpoint – does it help to visualize a fortress that God has surrounding us?

  1. BB – Excellent!

Let’s take the words of Psalm 46 and paint the picture…

Psalm 46:1 (ESV) — 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:2–3 (ESV) — 2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

Psalm 46:4–5 (ESV) — 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

Psalm 46:6–7 (ESV) — 6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Psalm 46:8–9 (ESV) — 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.

Psalm 46:10–11 (ESV) — 10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

CONCLUSION –  We set our  minds on the pictures that God has painted for us in His word… we find great comfort and encouragement to know He is our help and our protection…

  1. (JT) Turning to the physical aspect of life….

How important is sleep?

  1. Bob

  • Much more important than we think…
  • Immune system
  • Brain clearing and filing
  • Brain cleansing
  • Ward off Alzheimer
  • Rebuilding muscle

  • WHOOP – sleep challenges

((dark room // turn off screens // room temp // time to relax before bed)))

Better sleep requires discipline…

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
