  • BB – What do you do when circumstances of life seem to rob you of your joy?
    • JT - (((answer)))
  • JT – How do you deal with it?
    • BB (((answer)))

  1. Bob – POINT: Life can rob you of joy if you allow it. Remember the source of joy…

Galatians 5:22 (ESV) — 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Philippians 4:4 (ESV) — 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

The source and the reason for joy for a Christian is the Lord – His presence and His accomplishment of salvation…

Interesting then…

Philippians 1:18 (ESV) — 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

Sounds like rejoicing sometimes needs the kick of determination – doesn’t it?

  1. JT --- LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW –  as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

  1. JTQuestion ONE

Why is joy or rejoicing so important to my walk with the Lord?

  1. Bob

  • Evident fruit of the Spirit
  • Adherence to God’s command
  • Taking heed to the example

Galatians 5:22–23 (ESV) — 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  • Thessalonians 5:16 (ESV) — 16 Rejoice always,

Philippians 4:4 (ESV) — 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Deuteronomy 28:47 (ESV) — 47 Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things,

  • Think about the testimony we present with joy…
  • Think about the example of Paul in Philippians 1:12-18

Philippians 1:12–18 (ESV) — 12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

  1. JTQuestion ONE continued…

Do you see then joy as a test of whether a person is or isn’t really a Christian?

  1. Bob

  • Could be --- fruit of the Spirit = evidence of the spirit

Romans 8:9–11 (ESV) — 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

  • Preacher said that Maturity of A Christian can be marked by what it takes to rob him/her of joy…

Most of the time that relates to circumstances that stop us and get us down…

  1. JT – So what’s a person to do if circumstances stop up our joy?

  1. BB – “RESET BUTTON” – Go back to the basics! This is why we need a constant assessment and we need the accountability to others to point this out….

  • THE BASICS – realize God, the Holy Spirit dwells in us and He’ll produce the fruit … by His power … so we have what it takes.
  • We go back to the fact that REJOICING is commanded – it’s not optional
  • So we cooperate with the Spirit by focusing not on ourselves or our circumstances but upon God, seeking His presence and rejoicing in all that He has accomplished on our behalf….
  • Finally – it takes determination to keep from being overwhelmed by circumstances --- VIZ. Paul in prison.

CONCLUSION –  We set our  minds on rejoicing … determined to focus on what is right .. and we’ll be rejoicing by God’s grace.

  1. (JT) The next question is from a mental standpoint…

Determination – sounds like a mental exercise… is it?

  1. (Bob)

Actually – it’s a combination of spiritual and the mental but our minds are such an important part of our spiritual life.

Romans 10:17 (ESV) — 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 12:1–2 (ESV) — 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Isaiah 1:18 (ESV) — 18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

1 Corinthians 2:2 (ESV) — 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

1 Corinthians 2:2 (KJV 1900) — 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Philippians 3:14 (ESV) — 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:18 (ESV) — 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

  1. (JT) Turning to the physical aspect of life….

How’s a person who is a want to be athlete survive a very low or non active job?
