BB – We are talking today about … “The True Hope Of Christmas” … So JT – What are some of your Christmas hopes? Or some you’ve heard???
JT answers and discussion
- Bob – POINT: Everyone seems to have a different hope for Christmas, but the hope of a Christian a this time of the year is the renewed hope that was presented to the people in the OT times… that was the advent of Messiah. Although He has come, we still can appreciate and even hope in anticipation as we replay His first advent, knowing that is not the end of the story… but He has come, He has died, He has risen from the dead and is alive forever… PLUS He has promised to return…in His second advent
Revelation 1:18 (ESV) — 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
So today it’s the consideration of the The True Hope Of Christmas

- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
Boiling it all down – what is the true hope of Christmas? And why is it so important to get this right?
- Bob
The true hope of Christmas is the hope presented in the Old Testament looking forward to the first advent of Messiah… WORDS LIKE
Isaiah 9:6–7 (ESV) — 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Isaiah 42:1–4 (ESV) — 1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.
But for those who are after His first advent… Christ is still the hope… the expectation of the heart… which empowers us to live in this life.
Colossians 1:27–29 (ESV) — 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
But it even goes farther …
Philippians 3:10–14 (ESV) — 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:20–21 (ESV) — 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Why then is it so important to get this right?
What will last through the time – not a wish on things but an expectation based upon the truth… and the Lord Jesus Christ is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE and nobody comes to the Father but through Him
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How do we keep this true hope foremost in our minds when all around us are other hopes for this time of the year?
- Bob
It’s a matter of focus…
Philippians 3:7–10 (ESV) — 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) — 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
- (JT) Third Question …. Turning to the physical aspect of life….
Let’s talk some more about what you brought up last week in maybe something healthy about taking a break from our workouts. What???
Bob: OK some ideas…
….week-long breaks from exercise can actually help improve your fitness
Because especially at this time of the year you may often find yourself…
- Less motivation to exercise
- More fatigued during exercise
- A plateau in fitness gains
- Onset of new aches or pain
These are signals to me that a break is needed. Everyone is different, so you may notice shorter or longer time frames, as little as four weeks and as much as twelve weeks, for the onset of similar signals.
You would think that taking a whole week off from exercise would result in a loss of fitness, right? Surprisingly, not only is this not true, if you’re pushing yourself during exercise on most days of the week, there are actually benefits to taking a whole week off now and then.
Strength and aerobic endurance exercises impact many different structures in our bodies. his is a very common way that overuse injuries occur. You keep exercising because your muscles are feeling great, but at some point several weeks down the road you start feeling aches and pain in your joints because your bones, tendons, and ligaments are not so quick to recover.
By taking a week-long break from exercise about every six to eight weeks, you give the structures with less blood flow time to recover, which helps you avoid overuse injuries.
Improved fitness gains
Exercise is the stimulus for your body to get stronger, but it’s during rest that your body has the opportunity to repair and actually get stronger. If you’re exercising hard every single day for months, you’ll likely get weaker over time—if you don’t suffer from an injury first—because your body doesn’t have adequate time to recover. Yes, the additional rest will actually allow your body to get stronger!
Increased motivation
Taking a break from exercise is essential for the body and mind. Exercise is hard work that takes a toll on us mentally and emotionally over time so we need a periodic break from it to avoid burnout.
Any other thoughts JT
BB & JT discuss ---
