BB –  We are talking today about  “Wondrous Things”

So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))

  1. Bob – POINT:  To consider God, His creation, His works of providence, His word, and everything else about Him is beyond our comprehension. Yet to praise Him in the light that we have brings great joy as we seek to honor Him.

Psalm 8:3–4 (ESV) — 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

  1. JTQuestion ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….

Why is something so hard, as in finding words to describe God and His works and word, so rewarding, as in finding God’s presence and help as seek to praise Him?

  1. Bob

Dependency!

John 4:23 (ESV) — 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

Worship is something God calls us to do but we can’t do it adequately without His help, as in the help of the Holy Spirit.

So it is in understanding anything about God. It has to be revealed to us.

Matthew 11:25–27 (ESV) — 25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

1 Corinthians 2:14 (ESV) — 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV) — 7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

It’s important to realize how great God is and how inadequate we are in our understanding to even express a smiggen of His greatness.

Isaiah 55:8–9 (ESV) — 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

The reward comes in trying… as God, by the Holy Spirit helps us take what we have been given and use it to honor God.

DISCUSSION

  1. JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”

What is an appropriate mental strategy to understanding God?

  1. Bob

I can’t but He can…. So I’m dependent upon Him.

John 15:5 (ESV) — 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Psalm 103:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,

Discussion

  1. Third question … Turning to the Physical

Since you’ve completed how many marathons? … and how many Ironman triathlons?

What is a good stategy for people looking to do their first endurance event? Say a half ironman, ½ marathon, a century on the bike, and beyond?

  1. Bob --- Some tips from. Ultramarathoner – Dean Karnasas

The seminal Walt Stack once counseled on running an ultramarathon, “Start slow, and taper from there…” If there is one critical mistake a new ultrarunner can make, it’s going out too fast. Better to start slowly and conserve your energy. Another piece of sage advice: eat early and often. You don’t want to put yourself into a calorie deficit early in the race. Use a liquid fuel like HEED and Hammer Gels to provide a consistent source of easily digestible and slowly metabolized carbohydrates. Avoid foods and beverages with simple sugar, which can lead to an energy crash and hurt your performance rather than help it. Use Endurolytes to maintain your electrolyte balance and avoid cramping (or Endurolytes Extreme if it’s hot or you’re a heavy sweater). Lastly, don’t set your goal to finish in a certain time, but let finishing be the main goal for your first ultra. For getting to the finish line of an ultramarathon is an accomplishment in itself.

JT comments

Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to apply this in any endurance event… especially an ultra event… BUT it will pay off because you are more likely to finish strong.

Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
