- JT – This is the PowerBreak Podcast, I’m JT along with Bob Brubaker and this is the –– time for some questions and answers. Feel free to submit your questions by EMAIL TO JT@bobbrubaker.com and we’ll get to the answer on an upcoming PowerBreak. Podcast…
- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
You seem to talk about lamenting often, although I think this is the first time I’ve seen it in a blog. First, why are you so passionate about lamenting and secondly explain how this concept is to be used.
- Bob & JT discuss
First -- preaching through Psalms - coming across a lament and not knowing how to handle it… praying for guidance and God provided… recommendation of resources which I devoured in my preparation to preach and seeing how people responded to the practical application to using God’s spiritual means to minister to them when in the pit of life.
Secondly, the concept of lament is used whenever you in despair, grief, suffering, etc. You don’t have to remain in the pit…. Lament your way out. The four parts are addressing God, an honest complaint about the situation, an honest request, and a word of trust that God has complete control and you trust Him. I can’t explain it, I just know it helps to find words to go along with feelings when you lament. It seems to open the flood gate of God’s ministry of comfort and encouragement. Of course like any spiritual discipline, the more you put into it the more you seem to get out of it.
My regret is not having been taught anything about this in preparation for ministry and for it taking so long in my ministry before I saw it but God is sovereign and His timing is perfect.
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
How should we mentally look at lamenting? Isn’t a complaint a complaint?
- Bob & JT discuss
Actually it’s not when in a lament, it’s simply being honest with God about your situation. If you just complain, you are really accusing God of not knowing what He is doing. But in a lament, you may even come across accusing God as you complain but it’s tempered in your desire to just empty the cup of your heart of things you are harboring and He knows all about it anyway so it’s not a shock but your being honest and open with Him allows Him to them minister to your broken heart. So mentally you can look at a lament as unveiling your heart completely or as I like to say emptying the crud out of the cup so He can fill it.
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
Tis the fall marathon season. Since you’ve done a few, (what 30 or so??) do you have any tips on marathon nutrition.
- Bob & JT discuss
Weeks Before
- Study the course, the nutrition on the course, and develop a plan.
- Practice, practice, practice: Train with your race nutrition plan, train with the drinks on course, train with gels or whatever you will use.
- Practice your breakfast plan and also the meal plan the night before. Find out what works best for you.
- Make a reservation for dinner the night before at a place that you know is good. Don’t wait till the last moment.
Days Before
- Buy your race nutrition, don’t wait till the last moment.
- Increase your carbohydrate intake by eating more carbohydrate-rich (not just eating more).
- Reduce fiber intake 1 to 2 days before the event if you often suffer from gastrointestinal problems.
Pre-Race Breakfast
- Have your standard race breakfast that you have trained with 2.5-4 hours before.
- Avoid high fiber, high fat and high protein foods.
- Aim for at least 100 grams of carbohydrates.
- Drink enough fluid and check that your urine color is light.
The Hour Before
- Start your race fueling 5-15 min before the start (a gel with a few sips of water is an example).
During Your Marathon
- Stick to your nutrition plan, but don’t stick to it at all costs.
- Don’t experiment with anything new. Stick to what you have practiced.
- Aim for 30-60 grams per hour.
- Use sports drinks, gels, chews, and bars, depending on your personal preference. You can mix and match to achieve your carbohydrate goals.
- Avoid high fiber fat and protein intake during the run.
- Don’t overdrink, don’t under drink. Try to match our sweat loss or a little less. Some weight loss at the end (2% of your body weight is fine).
- Don’t use excessive salt or electrolyte intake.
Anything final thoughts on this JT?
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to make a plan and stick to the plan but it will pay off in the long run (teehee)
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
