Who Is in Charge Here?

  By  |

This is a question asked often when there is a problem, and you want to voice a complaint. You’ll find that there are many people who feel like they are in charge but they really aren’t so they can’t help you. Far too often people forget that the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself, is in charge.

Colossians 1:15–16 (ESV) — 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

Sounds like He is in charge, doesn’t it? As the sovereign ruler of heaven and earth He has the right to do as He pleases, and nobody has the right to question Him. This is what pagan King Nebuchadnezzar learned after God took Him from his throne to the field where he ate grass and lived like an animal for a period that he might learn humility before God. After which he had this to say:

Daniel 4:34–36 (ESV) — 34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” 36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me.

Another reason He cannot be questioned about what He is doing is because everything He does is perfect and just.

Deuteronomy 32:3–4 (ESV) — 3 For I will proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God! 4 “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.

Think of that next time you complain about life or the happenings around you, because your complaint about the situation is actually a complaint about the one who is in charge, The Lord Jesus Christ. No wonder God dealt harshly with the children of Israel when they offered their complaints; they were telling God that He is doing a lousy job of things.

Back to the one, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is in charge here. Consider His majesty:

Hebrews 1:1–3 (ESV) — 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Notice His majesty as God’s spokesman as He demonstrated the Father to us. He received His highest appointment by the Father. In fact, He brings the glory of God in view as we are blessed to see Jesus. In addition, He satisfied the Father in His work of purifying His people from their sins so that the Father can love His own without compromising His holiness.

John 1:14 (ESV) — 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:18 (ESV) — 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

1 John 4:10 (ESV) — 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

It’s encouraging to note that the Lord Jesus Christ came into this world to save His people from their sins, and He did it! Declared to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead, He now reigns as King! No question about it, declared so by the Father, He is in charge!

Psalm 2:6–9 (ESV) — 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

Isn’t it encouraging to have someone in control that can handle the authority, that knows exactly what to do in every situation, that will always do what is right, and that you can trust to have your best interest in mind? Consider what He told John as He gives John a vision and words to remind John and the churches (as well as us) as to Who is in control:

Revelation 1:13–18 (ESV) — 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

This vision was not to frighten John or us, rather to impress upon us the magnitude of His glory and power. He is in control, so we need not worry as we see things crumble around us. It’s all under control – His control.

Godspeed,
