God is a covenant keeping God. In fact, we are told that God not only does not lie, but cannot lie.
Titus 1:2 (ESV) — 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began
Hebrews 6:17–18 (ESV) — 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
That makes sense because we are given insight into that whenever God purposes something, He carries it out and every time God says something, it’s sure to happen
Isaiah 46:9–11 (ESV) — 9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ 11 calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.
Deuteronomy 32:4 (ESV) — 4 “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.
Think about it. All God does is perfect and right, so when He makes a statement of promise, it is rock solid in something that is sure and steadfast, or to use the phrase that describes Him and His promises, they are “amen.”
2 Corinthians 1:20 (ESV) — 20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
2 Corinthians 1:20 (KJV) — 20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
“Amen” is a truly remarkable word. Its journey spans languages and centuries: transliterated directly from Hebrew into the Greek of the New Testament, and then into Latin, English, and many other languages, it has become nearly universal. In fact, some have called it the best-known word in human speech.
The word is directly related—in fact, almost identical—to the Hebrew word for “believe” (aman), or “faithful.” Thus, it came to mean “sure” or “truly,” an expression of absolute trust and confidence. When one believes God, he indicates his faith by an “amen.” When God makes a promise, the believer’s response is “amen so it will be!” In the New Testament it is often translated “verily” or “truly.” When we pray according to His Word and His will, we know God will answer, so we close with an “amen,” and so also do we conclude a great hymn or anthem of praise and faith.
Consider then how the Bible closes, remembering of course God’s involvement in the assembly of the canon of Scripture.
Revelation 22:20–21 (ESV) — 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
The word, amen, is even a title of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
Revelation 3:14 (ESV) — 14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.
We can be preeminently certain that His Word is always faithful and true because He is none other than the Creator of all things, and thus He is our eternal “Amen.”
Consider the absolute certainty of God’s promises as He assures us that because of the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the Amen of God, all of God’s word is amen, so that all of His promises are amen. They are that certain.
Now with the certainty of amen in mind, we consider some of the many promises that God has given.
John 10:27–30 (ESV) — 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
Philippians 1:6 (ESV) — 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 13:5–6 (ESV) — 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
Jeremiah 33:3 (KJV) — 3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
A valuable tool to have is a collection of the promises of God because every time you feel the uncertainties of life coming down on you, the certainty of the Amen of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, provides the certainty of His promises.
