BB – We are talking today about “The Power Of Dependency”
So JT What does that title bring up to your mind? ((JT ANSWERS))
- Bob – POINT: We are either in a state of dependency or independency when it comes to our connection to God. Independency separates us from God and His blessings where dependency is both honoring to God and the only way to grow in the Christian life.
John 15:5 (ESV) — 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
- JT ------ OK THEN LET’S TALK SOME MORE ABOUT THAT as we bring up… WHAT’S NEW – as we open Bob’s recent blog from bobbrubaker.com …

- JT – Question ONE - FROM THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF LIFE….
Why Is living a life of dependency upon God so difficult for us?
- Bob & JT discuss
It goes against the grain of who we are in our fallen state. Thanks to Adam, in whom we all died when he sinned in the garden. So that we come into this world in rebellion against God and really in a constant fight to be totally independent to do whatever we please.
We don’t’ have to look very far than to children to see how their desire is to shrug off mom and dad and do things their way in their time. Hence in order to survive in life they need to learn to submit to those in authority but the bottom line is we are all wanting to do a. “Frank Sinatra” and say, I did it all my way.”
God on the other hand tells us to submit to Him and His authority. He is the only one who has the rright to demand His way all the time and His way is perfect and holy.
When God calls us to humble ourselves before Him, it’s because He is God and we are not. Notice then how Jesus described the state and blessings of dependency….
John 15:1–8 (ESV) — 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
God is not looking to ruin our lives. On the contrary, He is telling us that in order to walk with Him and enjoy His fellowship, we need to be dependent because without Him we can do nothing. Otherwise we would take pride in what we do which is an abomination to Him.
This is a maturing process that the Holy Spirit helps us take the word of God and apply it to circumstances inlife that God allows to teach us that we cannot make it in life without Him, so that a state of. Helplessness and dependency is a great blessing because it opens. Up a plethora of blesings from His hand.
- JT – Question Two… “FROM THE MENTAL ASPECT”
Let’s talk about practical ways to live in a dependent state – HOW do we apply ourselves mentally.
- Bob & JT discuss
Prayer - not just say prayers but pray. O’Hallesby in His book entitled, “Prayer” says that prayer is our being helpless before God and our helplessness is an attraction to God. The more we exercise saying that to God the better.
Consider the words of King Jeshoshophat as He called for a prayer meeting when things looked desperate as three enemies converged upon Jerusalem.
2 Chronicles 20:12 (ESV) — 12 O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
The world says, never show your weakness and just fake it til you make it. God says, Humble yourself before me by casting all your cares upon me for I care for you.
Humility that gets God’s attention begins in prayer as we humble ourselves before Him expressing our utter dependency upon Him.
- Third question … Turning to the Physical
Let’s talk about the need for weight training (resistance training) when a person is seeking to loose weight.
- Bob & JT discuss
Two types of strength training can contribute to weight loss: pure strength training and metabolic resistance training (MRT), also known as HIIT.
rue to the way it sounds, this part of the program is explicitly designed to build or maintain muscle mass.
Building and maintaining muscle is essential as people agebecause muscle loss happens faster with age. The other good news is that studies show that increasing muscle strength is still possible as people get older.7
There are other benefits to building muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the quicker your metabolism will be, and the more calories and fat your body will burn.8
Your body type and level of expertise will determine how much weight you should be lifting and for how long. You can get away with lifting heavier loads if you're more advanced. If you're starting, use lighter weights—or no weights—and then add on once you've mastered the movement.
Metabolic Resistance Training
MRT incorporates periods of intense work followed by a short rest period. A small study showed that interval exercise was more effective than moderate-intensity continuous exercise for increasing energy expenditure, the number of calories burned.10
When done correctly, MRT can be the best way to skyrocket your heart rate and keep your body burning fat throughout the rest of the day.
Any other thoughts JT?
Bob’s final comment – It takes discipline to apply yourself weight or strength training when you are trying to lose weight but the benefits are yours if you do…
Point: DISCIPLINE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE --- in all aspects of life
