God Is Faithful

  By  |

The title of this article is seen a number of times in the scriptures and each time we see another reason to be thankful that God is faithful.

1 Corinthians 1:9 (ESV) — 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

That statement is quite the reminder of the benefit we have because God is faithful in that His faithfulness has led to our calling in the Lord Jesus Christ. But let’s back up a bit and enjoy some added blessing.

1 Corinthians 1:4–9 (ESV) — 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Look how blessing upon blessing is revealed from God and His faithfulness.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV) — 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

When it comes to handling temptation, we must recognize our weakness as we rely upon His faithfulness to see us through. Something upon which we can definitely count on as we see His promise of help and relief is based upon the fact that God is faithful.

2 Thessalonians 3:1–5 (ESV) — 1 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, 2 and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. 4 And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Notice how living in a world that is violently set against the Lord Jesus Christ and His followers can get us down. But God is faithful, and He will establish us and guard us against the evil one. We can rely upon that promise because it’s based upon God being faithful and that is something He is. He always has been and always will be faithful.

Whenever we fail to fully obey in sins of commission or omission, we are admonished to confess our sins and rely upon God’s faithfulness to forgive and cleanse us.

1 John 1:6–10 (ESV) — 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 Thessalonians 5:14–24 (ESV) — 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

Notice how in the midst of a very important list of commands, there is quite a benediction of blessing that is based upon God’s faithfulness. Since God is faithful, you can count on Him to sanctify you completely and your being kept blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. All because God is faithful.

And there is more…

2 Timothy 2:11–13 (ESV) — 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.

The trustworthy saying is trustworthy because God is faithful. See how everything goes back to this important characteristic of God. God is faithful.

Hebrews 10:19–25 (ESV) — 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

We have confidence to enter the presence of God because we have a great high priest in the Lord Jesus Christ. So let us draw near, let us hold fast, and let us consider others. Why? Because the God who made these promises of blessings is faithful.

God is faithful. Celebrate it and enjoy each scripture you find that points to this glorious characteristic of God. He is faithful.

Godspeed,
