2020 Ride Across Florida

Here are the plans for the 2020 One Breath From Death – Look What God Can Do – Ride Across FL. Thursday, April 2nd – for all who have come to Melbourne Beach to spend the night before the ride, we like to meet for an early dinner – the place to be announced. Since Jan and I go over earlier in the week, we’ll scout out a place and let everyone know.

TRANSPORTATION QUESTION: How does a person get there?

  • Drive and have your spouse or other drive your car back OR
  • Share a one way rental with other riders.

Friday, April 3rd we’ll meet at the park behind Starbucks, corner of 192 and A1A in Melbourne Beach and if you wish to dip your wheel in the Atlantic ocean you may. Otherwise we’ll meet to leave at sunrise or as close to that as possible and head East on 192 to St. Cloud, going all the way to Dade City this year (around 120 miles), where we’ll spend the night. Jan has made arrangements at the Hampton Inn in Dade City. You’ll need to make your own reservations. (The local number is 352-567-5277. The rate is $159. (Believe it or not the rate is good considering the rates are up because of “wrestlemania in Tampa”) We’ll arrange some kind of Dinner delivered so we don’t have to mess with a restaurant. Last year the Sonny’s selection seemed amiable to all along with Glen’s beer connection. Everyone’s participation in donation really helps since we don’t throw out a “cost to ride.”

Saturday, April 4th – We’ll try to leave as close to sunrise as possible, although in the past it seems a little difficult to get everyone moving too early. We’ll take a vote on time we’ll leave.  When we do leave the hotel we’ll head back to the route – through the San Antonio hills over to Spring Hill and down the Suncoast Trail. This year we’ll be extending quite a bit as we connect to the Pinellas Trail and head to Clearwater and eventually to Redington Beach area where we’ll finish at Steve Pohlman’s place on the beach. (More than likely day two will be over 100 miles) (Steve’s address will be forthcoming in future emails.) He and his wife Wendy have graciously offered to host the post ride celebration which will be a great place to relax and if so desired set your wheel in the Gulf of Mexico. This is where your family or friends can join us as Wendy will be organizing what they can bring to participate in the post ride celebration.

Meanwhile we train. We want to schedule “B Crew” rides in San Antonio and I’m looking at a place in Elijay, GA to go a ride a few days in the hills up yonder. Stay tuned! Of course our weekly “B Crew” rides keep us sharp in riding with each other and offer good conditioning.

In addition, as mentioned in an earlier email, I plan to do the Sante Fe 100 in Gainesville on October 26th – although it’s pretty flat it’s still 100 miles. Then on December 7th there’s the Hilly 100 in Brooksville.

Each year we’ve had terrific groups on this “One Breath From Death” ride and it looks like another good group is forming. We hope you can join us. Feel free to invite anyone else who you think would enjoy riding with us since you pretty much know our pace. Just ask them to send me and email so I can put them on the list.

Again, we are working on sponsors to help cover some of the costs, including keeping the cost down on the kit. If you know of a potential sponsor, let us know. We’ll keep you posted on the kit which we’ll need order soon after the first of the year, which means we’ll need sponsors in place so the kits can be designed.

Check back often for updates. Also send me an email to be on the list for updates.
